We've got another easy DIY for the holidays, guaranteed to make you home smell lovely. I've always admired the jewel like qualities of dried fruit slices, but never made my own, until now!
Grab some fruit, I used lemons, oranges and a pink grapefruit. I wanted really colourful slices that would tie in with the holidays. (If you are anything like me you will enjoy playing with them a little too much)
Slice your fruit, in fairly thin slices so you can see a cross section of each one, like the pic below.
Enjoy how beautiful they look when freshly sliced, and it made the kitchen smell pretty good too!
Like I said, I may have enjoyed playing with these a little too much!
Pop your slices onto baking trays/dishes, I found that they dried out much better if the tray had a wire rack on top, that the slices could sit on. This allowed the air to circulate underneath at the same time for more even drying. But not to worry if you don't have any wire ones, the trays worked out fine.
Set your oven to a really low temperature, these went in on gas mark 2, but they probably could have used a little higher to dry them out quicker.
Now comes the hard/easy part. The waiting. And more waiting. And more waiting.
I like my crafts to be busy, to be doing something all the time. There is a lot of waiting around for these babies! I popped them in for 2 hours, then flipped them all over for another 2 hours, and then flipped them again for another 2 hours.
Here they are in the oven, almost ready to come out. I upped the temperature (Because I'm super impatient!) for the last hour just to make sure they were done!
You can see that the skins look hard and the middle section has shrunk slightly.
Once they are out of the oven, and cooled you can stand back and admire your handiwork!
Aren't they beautiful! I just love all the colours together. The lemon went slightly more transparent than I would have liked, but they are all lovely when the sun beams through them.
I wanted mine to be tied to the winter jars I made a few posts back here. So next up is how to tie them on, it's super easy!
Gather together your ribbon, dried slice, bells, jar and a knife.
Simply slice a little cut through your fruit and thread your ribbon through it! Add little bells if you like!
Ta Dah! Finished! Sit back and enjoy the sunlight beaming through the slices.
The slices below are: Orange, Lemon, Orange and Grapefruit.
Try tying your slices on with different materials to completely change the look!
These little slices are so cheap to make, and easy to do. Plus they make the house smell super Christmassy!
